Barb Causon (Wiradjuri)
Acting ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People Commissioner
It is my pleasure to provide a message in celebration of National Children’s Week 2026.
‍
My role is to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People and their families to ensure that their rights are protected and upheld. Some of those rights align directly with this year’s theme of ‘children have the right to use their own language, celebrate their culture and practice their religion’.
‍
We know that culture and connection are protective factors for our children, and we must always ensure that our children are not cut off or in any way prevented from engaging with such important rights.
‍
For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, as the future leaders of our communities, it is so important that their access to language and culture is embedded in all systems and supported by individuals that they engage with.
‍
The well-being of our children depends on all of us working together to ensure that these rights are respected and guaranteed.
Thank you to the ACT Children’s Week Committee for your invitation to be part of this important initiative.
