Jo Wood
Director General, Education Directorate
It is a great pleasure to provide my first message of support for ACT Children’s week. The ACT Education Directorate is again proud to sponsor and promote ACT Children’s Week. The 2025 ACT Children’s Week is a great opportunity to recognise the role of ACT families, carers, educators, community workers and volunteers, who all endeavour to make a difference to the lives of our young people as we strive to give them the best start in life. While doing so it is a great opportunity to celebrate young people’s achievements and raise awareness of their rights.

This year’s theme is based on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, CRC Article 42:  Governments should make the Convention known to all parents and children. Our education system reflects these rights through our long-term vision and strategies, including the Future of Education Strategy and Set Up for Success: An Early Childhood Strategy for the ACT.

The Future of Education: An ACT Education strategy for the next ten years and Set Up for Success – our early childhood strategy – recognise children’s rights and agency in their learning and the importance of community partnerships in achieving great outcomes. It is our goal to enable relationships to form between people and services and we are committed to providing strong communities for children.

Together, these strategies are more than policies—they are our promise to uphold the rights of every child and young person in the ACT. They guide how we shape classrooms, support teachers, partner with families, and build an education system that prepares children not just for school, but for life.

I would like to acknowledge the support, passion and determination of families, carers, educators, community workers and volunteers who work together to support the physical and wellbeing needs of children and young people in the ACT.

I thank the ACT Children’s Week Committee for their continued commitment to highlighting the important needs and rights of our children and young people.
