Each year as a theme for Children’s Week one of the Articles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child is chosen for special consideration.

This is useful and informative.

Last year the theme was that Children Have the Right to a Safe and Clean Environment.
This year is a little different but very important as the Article chosen is Number 42.
What is different is that it talks about who should do something about the Rights of the Child, and Article 42 is clear.

We all have a responsibility.

Article 42 says that parties to the Convention make the principles and provisions of the Convention widely known by appropriate and active means.

I would say that every adult has a responsibility to do whatever they can to see that children benefit from the aims of this convention.

In Canberra we are most fortunate to have our Committee who plan and present Children’s week each year. By doing so they are supporting the aim of Article 42 and promoting the Convention in our community.

To the President and Committee, thank you for what you do.

Also, those of you nominated for Children’s Week awards. You are playing an important role and are a significant part of the message about the Convention.
